General information

The Loire River is added to the World Heritage List of UNESCO. Located in the geographical heart of France, it rises from south, not far from the Mediterranean Sea to flow into the Atlantic Ocean in the north-west part of the country. Along its way, the river brings together beautiful nature, historical and cultural attractions and the longest and varied wine region in France becoming the third most popular tourist destination in the country after Paris and the Riviera. The Loire is the leading producer of white wines in France, here they are produced in all possible styles: white, red, rosé, sparkling and sweet. Every fourth of the households in France consume wines from the Loire region. The valley which is long over 800 km is divided into the following sub regions: Pays Nantes, Anjou, Saumur, Touraine and Central Loire each with different geography, climate and soils respectively with different local varieties and different style of wines. The viticulture on the banks of the Loire River is part of the agriculture in the region; the grape is cultivated together with many other cultures. The plots are family owned and small sized.

Estate

Le Château de Fontenay Estate was established in 1680. Currently it is managed by two brothers, heirs of the family - Didier and Philippe and their families. It is located in Touraine region, not far from the city of Tours, on the banks of the Loire River.

Sauvignon Blanc is the most wide-spread variety in Central Loire and probably right here is its homeland. On the limestone soils of Touraine, Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre, it obtains this so characteristic varietal expression that has brought a worldwide reputation of the Loire wines. The wines from the Central Loire are purely varietal, dry, and fruity, with a significant freshness and high mineralization. Most of the wines are consumed in the year of production but the high freshness allows the wines from good vintages to age especially those in contact with oak.

Wine

The wine fascinates with its golden-greenish colour and aromas of peach blossoms, white flowers and citrus. Very well balanced mineral body, compelling fresh aftertaste.
